Is there a way we could reframe education into a 2x2 matrix?
One axis could be DENSITY, less with use-cases. Second category could be MOTIVATION (intrinsic vs extrinsic)
Let's see:
- Low Density + Extrinsic Motivation = Temporary Memorization. Kid will learn to have good grades. They're not motivated by the best reasons and lack of context will make the knowedge fade quickly.
- Low Density + Intrinsic Motivation = Forget. The kid wants to get the knowledge but it's out of context and it won't stick.
- High Density + Extrinsic Motivation = The kid can remember the knowledge well enough, but their drive comes from an external system. Therefore, the knowledge is here and sticks with no purpose.
- High Density + Intrinsic Motivation = Productive Learning. The knowledge sticks, and the kid has an inner drive to put it to practice.
Density decides if the piece of knowledge sticks or not.
Motivation decides if the kid will care about it on the long run, or not.
Now:
- How do we provoke high density?
- And high intrinsic motivation ?
